WAEC’s Revised WASSCE 2025 Results Spark Calls for Investigation

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is facing intense criticism following a sudden change of its 2025 recently released West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.

The initial results, released July 4th, showed a dismal 38.32% pass rate among 1,969,313 candidates.

This sparked immediate outrage, with calls for the cancellation of papers, particularly English and Mathematics.

WAEC attributed the initial low pass rate to “technical glitches” and temporarily suspended results access.

Upon the results’ reinstatement on August 10th, the pass rate had inexplicably increased to 62.96%.

This drastic change fueled further accusations of incompetence and calls for a thorough independent investigation into WAEC’s processes and management.

Stakeholders, including parents, teachers and the Founder of Exam Ethics Marshall International, Ike Onyechere, are demanding accountability and potential sanctions.

Onyechere described the situation as a “national disaster,” highlighting the potential damage to the credibility of Nigerian academic qualifications.

“You cannot make such a serious examination, a subject of trial and error. Today, the pass rate is 38 percent; tomorrow, it becomes 63 percent. How are we supposed to trust the authenticity of these results?,” he queried.

The controversy underscores concerns about funding and systemic issues within the Nigerian education system.

Parents were not left behind as they called for an independent investigation to determine whether candidates were unfairly failed or passed in either of the two results released.

Nathaniel Adamu, one of the parents called on the government at all levels to make deliberate attempt to revive the education sector.
