Babcock University Inducts New Doctors, Urges Impactful Service

Babcock University’s Benjamin Carson College of Health and Medical Sciences recently held its 10th medical graduation ceremony, where 101 new doctors were inducted into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
This event officially marks their transition from students to practicing healthcare professionals.
Speaking at the event, President/Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ademola Tayo, who was represented by Senior Vice President of Academics Prof. Philemon Amanze, offered the graduates five pillars for a successful career including competence, compassion, integrity, collaboration, and faith.
He urged the new doctors to prioritize purpose over popularity.
“You have to pursue purpose over popularity. Seek service, not status,” and outline five pillars for success including: competence, compassion, integrity, collaboration, and faith.” he advised
He also emphasized the importance of ethical conduct and confidentiality, framing their MBBS degree as the start of a journey of lifelong learning and service.
The Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, acknowledged the difficulties of their chosen profession but encouraged them to stay focused.
She highlighted the significant positive impact they could have on the Nigerian healthcare system, stating,..
“To achieve greatness, you must diligently utilize every opportunity and commit to making a lifelong impact.”
Prof. John Sotunsa, the College Provost, echoed this sentiment, encouraging the graduates to embrace their roles as caregivers, system reformers, policy influencers, and technology adopters to contribute to Nigeria’s development.
The event also celebrated academic excellence, with Chisom Okafor, the top-performing graduate, receiving multiple awards.
She earned 10 distinctions in her final MBBS exams and was awarded N400,000 in cash prizes from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Ogun State and anonymous donors.
Dr. Tijjani Ali Mandaka, representing the MDCN Registrar, Dr. Fatima Kyari, also advised the new doctors to learn from experienced professionals and understand their own limitations.
He emphasized the importance of collaboration to make a positive impact on the healthcare sector.
