Humanitarian Day: Stakeholders Call for More Aid and Security for Aid Workers

​As the world marks this year’s World Humanitarian Day, stakeholders in Nigeria’s humanitarian sector are calling for increased aid and better security for aid workers.

​According to these stakeholders, donations are declining due to the significant security risks that humanitarian workers face across the country.

​In an interview, Professor Francis Origa, Registrar and CEO of the Institute for Humanitarian Studies and Social Development, urged the government and well-meaning Nigerians to do everything possible to alleviate the suffering of citizens.

He noted that the high level of poverty in Nigeria has contributed to the widespread insecurity people are experiencing.

“The security challenge has been the major issue of concern here in Nigeria. We haven’t actually been as proactive as we should be. As a nation and as government, what are we doing to put preventive measures in place to ensure that people who would want to give humanitarian aid in times of disaster and hunger don’t also risk their own life by being attacked on the way. When you have high level of poverty, you will always have high level of insecurity“. he expressed.

​Professor Origa also appealed to all levels of government to ensure that humanitarian aid funds reach the intended recipients saying that this would encourage donors and prevent them from being discouraged.

“A lot of Donors are beginning to withdraw. When corruption is on the increase, fundings released does not get to the right persons. Donors because of this get discouraged because they are not getting value for what they sent their money to. Government should be able to wake up to that responsibility.”

This year’s theme, “Strengthening global solidarity and empowering local communities,” calls for collective action as humanitarian needs continue to rise across the globe.
