Nigerian Government unveils New School Curriculum for JSS, SSS Students

Nigerian Government has introduced a new national school curriculum set to begin in September 2025.

The curriculum, which aims to modernize education, was shared on social media by the Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.

​Key Changes and Highlights
​The new curriculum places a strong emphasis on digital literacy, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies.

For the first time, subjects like digital literacy and coding will be compulsory at the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level.

This focus continues into Senior Secondary School (SSS), where students will explore programming, artificial intelligence, and data science.

​Junior Secondary School (JSS 1-3) Subjects
​The JSS curriculum is structured to provide a broad foundation of knowledge and skills.

Mathematics & Measurement: Covers foundational math concepts including fractions, geometry, algebra, and statistics.

English Language: Focuses on advanced grammar, essay writing, and oral communication skills.

Integrated Science: Combines key principles of physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science.

Digital Literacy & Coding: Introduces basic computer skills in programs like Word and Excel, as well as foundational coding in Python and Scratch.

Social Studies: Explores Nigerian and African history, civics, and basic economics.

Languages: Teaches advanced mother tongue and conversational skills in a foreign language like French or Arabic.

Creative Arts: Includes drawing, painting, drama, and basic film production.

Physical & Health Education: Covers sports, fitness, and health topics, including drug abuse awareness and first aid.

Senior Secondary School (SS 1-3) Subjects
​The SSS curriculum builds on the JSS foundation with more specialized and in-depth subjects.

​Mathematics & Advanced Applications: Extends into trigonometry, calculus, and financial mathematics.

​English & Communication: Develops advanced academic writing, research, and public speaking skills.
​Sciences: Offers specialized courses in physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science.

​Technology & Innovation: A core component that includes advanced programming (Python, JavaScript), AI, robotics, and cybersecurity.

​Social Sciences: Covers government, law, economics, history, and ethics.

​Languages: Focuses on advanced literature and fluency in international languages, with Chinese as a new option.

​Creative Arts & Innovation: Expands into film and media production.
​Physical & Health Education: Features advanced sports, mental health, and first aid.

​Research & Project Work: A final-year capstone project that requires data collection, analysis, and a final presentation.
