NAMA Defends Management Over Retirees’ Benefits, Denies Misuse of Public Funds

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has defended its management over allegations surrounding unpaid retirees’ benefits, insisting that the current leadership inherited the backlog and has taken concrete steps to resolve the issue.

In a statement, following concerns raised by some retirees during a television interview, the agency said the outstanding entitlements did not originate under the administration of Managing Director, Engr. Farouk Ahmed Umar, but were longstanding issues linked to pension policy gaps and funding processes.

NAMA stated that the present management engaged retirees and their representatives, secured necessary approvals, and directed relevant departments to commence settlement procedures.

The agency explained that payments within public institutions must follow due process, including documentation, budgetary provisions, verification, and final approvals before disbursement can be made.

According to NAMA, the current administration has also implemented major welfare reforms for serving staff, including the full implementation of the Staff Conditions of Service and a new salary structure aimed at improving workers’ welfare and boosting morale across its operations nationwide.

The agency further highlighted improvements in staff training, operational conditions, and engagement with both active and retired personnel as part of broader reforms targeted at strengthening the aviation sector.

Reacting to allegations that public funds were used for the Managing Director’s personal religious activities, NAMA dismissed the claims as false and misleading.

“The agency operates on the principles of professionalism, inclusiveness, and accountability. The Managing Director’s personal religious obligations are privately funded,” the statement said.

NAMA also maintained that it has continued to improve navigational infrastructure, safety systems, and technical manpower development in line with global aviation standards.

While acknowledging the frustrations of retirees over delayed payments, the agency urged stakeholders to focus on verified facts and measurable achievements.

“History will judge public officers not by orchestrated propaganda or emotional accusations, but by the measurable impact of their stewardship,” the agency stated.
