Comedians Raise Concerns Over Insecurity as Humour Awards Honour Excellence

‎Concerns over insecurity and economic hardship took centre stage at the 4th edition of The Africa Humour Awards as comedians and entertainers called on government authorities to take urgent steps to restore safety and hope across the country.

‎The awards ceremony, held in Lagos, celebrated outstanding achievements in comedy and digital content creation while also providing a platform for performers to speak on issues affecting both citizens and the entertainment industry.

Speaking on the red carpet, comedian Brain Wizzy described comedy as a form of therapy that helps people cope with life’s challenges but lamented that the nation’s current realities have made it increasingly difficult to bring laughter to audiences.

According to him, comedians often draw inspiration from societal issues, but the emotional toll of insecurity and hardship presents a different challenge.

“The situation of the country is comedy material. Nigeria is a joke so it is easy to get what to say to make people laugh. But what is not easy is when you’re trying to make people that the situation of the country is affecting laugh,” he said.

Brain Wizzy noted that many Nigerians are currently burdened by economic difficulties and security concerns, making it harder for entertainers to connect with audiences through humour.

‎”It is impossible to make the parents of those abducted children laugh. The whole country has been thrown into mourning,” he added.

Fashion stylist and designer Prince Eletu shared similar concerns, urging government authorities to intensify efforts to address insecurity and rescue abducted children.

‎He stressed that citizens deserve to live in a safe environment where they can pursue their livelihoods without fear.

“The government should do everything within its power to rescue the abducted children and make the country safer for citizens,” he said.

‎Despite the concerns raised, the event remained a celebration of creativity, resilience and excellence within Africa’s comedy industry.

Themed “Create Your Chance,” the 2026 edition highlighted the determination of comedians and content creators who continue to build successful careers through innovation and digital platforms.

Several entertainers also acknowledged the role of social media and digital content creation in transforming the comedy landscape, noting that online platforms have opened new opportunities for creators to reach wider audiences and generate income.

One of the major highlights of the evening was the recognition of popular skit maker Taaooma, who emerged as the winner of the Best Online Female Skit Maker award.

The event attracted some of Africa’s most celebrated comedy personalities, including veteran comedians Julius Agwu and Bovi.

Special honours were also presented to notable personalities. Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson received the African Recognition Award, while businessman and former lawmaker Hon. Shina Peller was honoured with the Most Supportive Personality of the Year Award.

Renowned fashion entrepreneur Seyi Vodi was also recognised for his contributions to the creative industry.

Organisers said the awards continue to serve as a platform for celebrating excellence in comedy and content creation while encouraging creators across Africa to turn challenges into opportunities.

‎As winners emerged and achievements were celebrated, the message from many attendees remained clear: while comedy provides relief and healing, lasting laughter can only thrive in a society where people feel safe, secure and hopeful about the future.
