Maresca Embraces Challenge of Succeeding Guardiola, Confident in Manchester City’s Future.

New Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has described succeeding Pep Guardiola as both a privilege and a major challenge, acknowledging the difficulties that often follow the departure of long-serving, successful managers.

Speaking at his first press conference since taking charge of the Premier League champions, Maresca reflected on the struggles experienced by Manchester United after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 and Arsenal following Arsène Wenger’s departure in 2018.

“It’s a challenge. It’s nice,” Maresca said. “The history of managers who spend many years at the same club shows that their successors often struggle a little. After Sir Alex, after Arsène. But it’s also a challenge to do the right things immediately for this organisation, the fans and everyone connected with the club.”

Despite the magnitude of replacing Guardiola, who won 17 major trophies during his decade at City, Maresca expressed confidence that the club’s stable leadership and structure would help ensure continued success.

“The organisation is the main thing,” he said. “This club has had only three managers in 17 years—Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola. That is not normal in football. It shows the stability of the club.”

“I’m confident we can continue the excellent work that started under Roberto, continued with Manuel and reached incredible heights during Pep’s 10 years.”

Maresca also confirmed that midfielder Rodri will undergo back surgery on Monday, ruling him out of the start of the new season.

Addressing speculation linking the Spanish international with a move to Real Madrid, the City boss dismissed concerns over the player’s future.

“Around top players there is always speculation,” he said. “I’m not worried because every manager would like to have Rodri. Right now, he needs surgery, rest and recovery before returning to us.”

On the transfer front, Maresca admitted that goalkeeper James Trafford and winger Jack Grealish could leave the club before the transfer window closes.

Regarding Grealish, he said: “At the moment, Jack is a Manchester City player. As long as a player belongs to this club, it is my responsibility to coach him. Then we will see what happens.”

Speaking about Trafford, whom he previously coached with Manchester City’s Under-23 side, Maresca added: “James is one of our goalkeepers at the moment. But with the transfer window open, anything can happen.“
