Former Arsenal midfielder David Bentley has revealed that uncertainty over Arsene Wenger’s plans convinced him to leave the club, despite having recently signed a new five-year contract.

Bentley, who came through Arsenal’s ranks under Wenger, admitted that he now regrets his decision to push for a move away from the Gunners.

The former England international joined Arsenal’s professional setup in 2001 and made his senior debut for the club two years later under Wenger.

However, after spending time on loan at Norwich City, Bentley returned to Arsenal with his future already in doubt. He eventually submitted a transfer request following the end of his loan spell.

He completed a move to Blackburn Rovers in January 2006 before joining Tottenham Hotspur two years later for a reported £15 million transfer fee.

Looking back on his career, Bentley believes he should have remained at Arsenal for longer but acknowledged that he lacked confidence in Wenger’s long-term vision for the team.

Speaking on the Undr The Cosh podcast, Bentley explained that the pressure on players during his era was significantly greater, particularly when they were left out of the starting XI.

He said:“Because, if you found yourself out the team, you were criticised more than you are now. Now, you’re a squad player. Just having a rest, not in the squad today.

Bentley’s decision came during Wenger’s long and successful spell at Arsenal, with the Frenchman later guiding the club to multiple major honours.

Arsenal have since entered a new era under Mikel Arteta, who has restored the club to the top of English football and ended a long wait for another league title.

Bentley’s admission highlights one of the more significant regrets of his playing career, as he now believes he may have benefited from staying at Arsenal and trusting Wenger’s plans.
