Nintendo is set to officially launch its gaming consoles in Indonesia for the first time in December 2026, marking the Japanese gaming giant’s entry into Southeast Asia’s largest economy.

The company will introduce both the original Nintendo Switch and the newer Nintendo Switch 2 to the Indonesian market through official distribution channels.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Creative Economy, a subsidiary of the Salim Group, one of the country’s largest business conglomerates, has been appointed as the official distributor.

Nintendo confirmed its December launch plans but declined to disclose further details about the rollout.

Indonesia’s Vice Minister for Creative Economy, Irene Umar, said the move could help tackle copyright violations by providing consumers with access to Nintendo products through authorised channels.

She also noted that Indonesia is working to make Nintendo’s developer kit available to local game developers, potentially creating more opportunities for the country’s gaming industry.

Nintendo consoles and game cartridges are currently available in Indonesia largely through unofficial distribution channels. This has contributed to uncertainty around pricing, according to local game developer Adam Ardisasmita.

Meanwhile, Axton Salim of the Salim Group said the company’s subsidiary would collaborate with Nintendo to establish an official repair centre and customer service operations in the country, state news agency Antara reported.

Indonesia’s gaming industry is estimated to be worth about 30 trillion rupiah ($1.68 billion) annually, making it the largest gaming market in Southeast Asia. However, local developers account for only about 2.5% of total consumer spending, according to the Indonesian Game Association.

Nintendo launched the Switch 2 in June 2025 and expects to sell 16.5 million units during its current financial year ending March 2027.

The official launch in Indonesia is expected to give Nintendo greater access to the country’s rapidly growing gaming market while also providing consumers with authorised products, customer support and repair services.
