The Nigerian naira remained relatively stable against the United States dollar on Friday, August 14, 2026, with the currency trading around ₦1,364.83 per dollar in the official foreign exchange market and about ₦1,405 in the parallel market.

According to data published by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the official Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) rate stood at ₦1,364.83 to $1.

The CBN explained that the NFEM rate is determined using a volume-weighted average of completed foreign exchange transactions, making it the benchmark rate for official forex dealings in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the dollar was trading at approximately ₦1,405 in the parallel market, based on rates obtained from Bureau de Change operators and open-market currency dealers in Lagos and other major cities.

The difference between the official and parallel market rates was about ₦40 per dollar, reflecting a relatively moderate gap compared with the wider disparities witnessed during periods of intense foreign exchange volatility in 2024 and 2025.

As of Friday, August 14, the indicative rates were:
Official NFEM rate: $1 = ₦1,364.83
Parallel market rate: $1 = approximately ₦1,405Difference: approximately ₦40 per dollar.

Market participants said trading opened cautiously, with foreign exchange demand from importers and individuals largely matched by available supply.

Sources of dollar liquidity include export proceeds, diaspora remittances and other autonomous foreign exchange inflows.

Recent market movements have also shown the naira trading within a relatively narrow range.

The official rate has remained around the mid-₦1,360 level, while parallel market rates have hovered around ₦1,400.

At the official NFEM rate of ₦1,364.83 per dollar, $100 is equivalent to approximately ₦136,483.

At the parallel market rate of about ₦1,405 per dollar, $100 would be approximately ₦140,500.

The actual amount received may vary depending on the dealer, transaction channel and prevailing rate at the time of exchange.

Analysts said the naira’s direction in the short term will depend on several factors, including foreign exchange inflows, crude oil earnings, diaspora remittances and the CBN’s management of liquidity in the forex market.

They noted that continued stability in the official market could help reduce speculative pressure and limit the premium between the official and parallel markets.

As of Friday morning, trading conditions remained relatively calm, with no major intraday movements reported by currency dealers.

Exchange rates can change during the day.

Readers are advised to confirm the prevailing rate with authorised financial institutions or licensed Bureau de Change operators before carrying out a transaction.
