Nigeria’s U-19 Cricketers Secure Next Stage of World Cup Qualification

Nigeria’s Junior Yellow Greens have secured qualification for the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup Africa Division 1 Qualifier following their campaign at the Africa Division 2 tournament in Rwanda.
The Nigerian youngsters earned one of the three qualification places available at the six-nation tournament, moving another step closer to a place at the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Nigeria advanced alongside Uganda and hosts Rwanda, with the three countries progressing to the Division 1 stage of the African qualification pathway.
The Division 2 competition, held in Kigali from August 9 to 15, brought together Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Mozambique. The teams competed for three places in the next round of qualification.
Nigeria began the tournament against Uganda before facing Ghana, Rwanda, Mozambique and Sierra Leone in the round-robin competition.
The Junior Yellow Greens recovered from an opening defeat to Uganda with a five-wicket victory over Ghana. Nigeria dismissed Ghana for 93 runs in 39.5 overs before reaching 96 for five in 22.2 overs to secure their first victory of the competition.
Nigeria subsequently strengthened their position in the qualification race and secured a top-three finish, guaranteeing promotion to Africa Division 1.
The team eventually finished as runners-up in Rwanda. On their return, the Junior Yellow Greens presented their runners-up trophy to the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation during a reception organised in their honour.
The result keeps alive Nigeria’s ambition of returning to the global U-19 tournament. Nigeria previously made its first appearance at the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2020 after successfully navigating the African qualification pathway.
The next challenge will be considerably tougher. Division 1 represents the final African stage of the qualification process, where Nigeria will have to compete against stronger teams for a place at the World Cup.
Before travelling to Rwanda, the Nigeria Cricket Federation selected a 14-player squad captained by Rahmon Ali following a multi-stage preparation and selection programme.
The squad included Ismail Abdullahi, Andrew Abah, Precious Ayeni, Daniel Ayodele, Kenneth Boniface, Princewill Chigozie, Bright Edem, Peculiar Egemasi, Okasha Isiyaku, Emmanuel Oladejo, Hossana Omokhobhio, Pelumi Orimolade and Folajimi Owolabi.
Nigeria’s qualification from Rwanda therefore represents progress rather than qualification for the World Cup itself. The Junior Yellow Greens must still negotiate the Africa Division 1 stage successfully to secure a place at the global competition.
