Stakeholders Urge Collective Action to Protect Schools

As the world marks the International Day to Protect Education from attack, Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for collective action to safeguard schools and ensure that education remains secure across the country.

Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that education must never be compromised, warning that any society that fails to protect its schools risks undermining its own future.

She described this year’s theme “Challenging Narratives, Reshaping Action.”as a clarion call to move beyond rhetoric to take bold, and decisive steps to guarantee the safety of learners, teachers, and educational institutions nationwide.

The First Lady while commending the efforts of security agencies urged them to intensify their commitment to protecting schools.

“I appreciate organisations such as UNICEF, UNESCO, and the Education Above All Foundation for their contributions to advancing child education globally. In Nigeria, our security agencies are doing their best, but protecting schools must remain a shared national priority,” she said.

Other stakeholders echoed similar sentiments.

Vanessa Lee, UNICEF’s Chief of Education, and ACG Ocheja Emmanuel, Commander of the National Safe School Response Coordination Centre, reaffirmed their readiness to support the Nigerian government in ensuring the safety of schools and children.

Lee highlighted UNICEF’s role in training and equipping teachers to provide safe and supportive environments for children.

“A safe school is one where children look forward to learning. We must continue to provide training, coaching, and resources so that teachers can teach effectively and support children in need,” she said.

ACG Emmanuel re-emphasized that every school must be a place of safety and growth, underscoring the collective responsibility of all stakeholders.

Education, they noted, remains the foundation of hope — and protecting it means securing the nation’s future.
