Nigeria has set a new African record in the mixed 4×100 metres relay.

The quartet of Favour Ashe, Jennifer Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Omokwe clocked an impressive time of 40.24 seconds on Saturday in one of the heats at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone.

Despite finishing fourth in the heat, the team advanced to the final after securing one of the two non-automatic qualification spots. The performance also earned Nigeria a place in the mixed 4×100m event at the World Athletics Championships 2027 in Beijing.
The final of the mixed 4×100m relay is scheduled for Sunday at 4:05 pm Nigerian time.

However, Nigeria did not reach the final in five other events. The men’s 4×100m team finished fifth in their heat, while the women’s team failed to finish following a baton exchange error.

The squad was further weakened by the late withdrawal of Rosemary Chukwuma, Blessings Ogundiran, and Anita Enaruna.

In the 4×400m relays, Nigeria placed third in the mixed event, while both the men’s and women’s teams finished sixth in their respective heats.
Nigeria will have another opportunity to secure qualification for the World Championships through the repechage rounds on Sunday.
