FG Bans Street Begging, Introduces Digital and Vocational Training for Almajiri

The Federal Government has introduced a new policy to reform Nigeria’s Almajiri education system, banning learners from begging on the streets or engaging in menial jobs.

The new National Policy for the Enhancement of Almajiri Education seeks to combine Qur’anic education with basic literacy, numeracy, digital skills, technical education and vocational training.

Under the policy, Almajiri learning centres found sending children out to beg could face sanctions, including withdrawal of their operating approval.

The government also plans to introduce nationally recognised certificates for graduates of registered Almajiri centres, while requiring schools to register with relevant authorities and maintain proper records of their learners.

The policy further sets minimum standards for the welfare and safety of children, including access to healthcare, clean water, sanitation and proper learning facilities.

The Federal Government said the reform is aimed at protecting Almajiri learners from abuse and exploitation while equipping them with skills that can improve their future employment and economic opportunities.
