FAAN Confirms No Fire at Lagos Airport Terminal 2

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, following an earlier emergency response triggered by smoke inside the facility.
The clarification came after the authority initially announced that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) had responded to reports of a possible fire at the terminal.
Emergency personnel were immediately deployed to secure the area while passengers and airport users were advised that the situation was being assessed.
Following detailed inspections by emergency responders and technical personnel, FAAN confirmed that no fire was detected and that there were no injuries or casualties.
Smoke Linked to FM-200 Fire Suppression System
In a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority explained that preliminary investigations traced the smoke to the activation of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system.
According to FAAN, the suppression system discharged unexpectedly, creating smoke that prompted the emergency response.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” the statement read.
The agency noted that investigations are ongoing to determine why the suppression system activated unexpectedly and whether it resulted from a technical fault or another factor.
FAAN assured passengers, airlines and other airport users that normal operations have resumed at the terminal after safety assessments confirmed the facility was safe for use.
The authority said the temporary disruption did not compromise airport safety and that flight schedules and passenger processing continued after emergency officials cleared the affected area.
“Airport operations have fully resumed at Terminal 2, and passengers can continue their journeys as scheduled. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of all airport users during the incident.”
FAAN also commended its emergency response teams for their swift intervention, saying their prompt action helped ensure the situation was effectively managed without injuries or fire damage.
The authority reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards across Nigeria’s airports, adding that investigations into the unexpected activation of the FM-200 system will continue to prevent similar incidents in the future.
